As I have mentioned before, Google algorithms are constantly being updated. It should come as no surprise that Google itself is also updated consistently. What I have not mentioned is that these updates have a name: Panda and Penguin. These are two terms that frequent SEO blogs and I thought it would help to understand what they truly meant.

Panda

This update was released to decrease the number of low-quality sites being returned in the search results. These low-quality sites include sites with little to no value for users or use other people’s content.  If a certain amount of pages on a particular site were flagged as having no useful content, the entire site was penalized. In return, better quality sites will see improvements in their rankings. Panda doesn’t exactly target spam, but it does target pages that have no value for users.

Check out Search Engine Land’s infographic displaying all of the updates Panda had from it’s creation in February of 2011 to the present.

Penguin

The Penguin update is more of an algorithm that is used to find and penalize sites that uses web spam.  These sites are already violating Google’s quality guidelines and are still ranking because they are being sneaky with their spam. That is why Penguin is used to find these sites that do not have easily recognizable spam content. Penguin mainly looks for this kind of information in anchor texts and through content for keyword stuffing (purposely placing keywords in content that does not belong or is irrelevant).
